AirAsia Doubles Passengers In 2Q And Powers Capital A Growth.

Capital A Berhad (Capital A) has released its operating statistics for the second quarter of the financial year 2023, covering the performance of its aviation, digital, logistics, and aviation services segments from April 1st to June 30th, 2023 (2Q2023).

The interconnected nature of the operating segments means that a strong showing in Aviation has a positive impact on the entire Capital A group, as evident in 2Q where the four consolidated airlines nearly doubled the number of passengers carried compared to the same quarter last year.

During 2Q, AirAsia Malaysia, AirAsia Thailand, AirAsia Indonesia, and AirAsia Philippines together transported 14.2 million passengers, a substantial increase from the 7.2 million passengers in 2Q 2022. Across the aviation group, 16.2 million seats were available, and efficient capacity management resulted in an impressive load factor of 88%, up from 82% the previous year.

The consolidated AirAsia airlines operated 146 out of their 166 activated aircraft, marking a recovery to 73% of capacity and 74% of passengers carried compared to pre-pandemic levels in the first half of 2019. Over the quarter, the group conducted 88,900 flight stages with an average length of 1,165 kilometers (724 miles). At the end of the quarter, the group operated 146 aircraft from its total fleet of 210 aircraft.

Examining individual airlines' share of group passenger traffic, AirAsia Malaysia (MAA) led the way with 6.45 million passengers at a load factor of 87%, followed by AirAsia Thailand (TAA) with 4.64 million passengers at 89%, AirAsia Philippines (PAA) with 1.63 million passengers at 91%, and AirAsia Indonesia (IAA) with 1.52 million passengers at 84%.

MAA utilized 66 aircraft for 40,385 stages, TAA employed 44 aircraft for 28,475 stages, PAA utilized 15 aircraft for 9,921 stages, and IAA operated 21 aircraft for 10,119 stages. IAA had the longest average stage length of 1,433 kilometers (890 miles), followed by MAA, TAA, and PAA with 908 kilometers (564 miles).
