WhatsApp Rolls Out HD Photo Sharing and Bans 7.4 Million Indian Accounts in Preventive Measures

Reports suggest that WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is introducing the capability to send high-definition (HD) photos to its users. According to WaBetaInfo, a report indicates that a select group of beta testers on Android and iOS is observing a new option that enables them to manage the quality of the photos they send. This feature is accessible to individuals who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS version 23.11.0.76 update from the TestFlight app, as well as the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.12.13 update from the Google Play Store.

The report includes a screenshot of the feature, demonstrating that WhatsApp users will have the ability to select better quality when sharing photos. However, this option is only displayed for larger-sized photos and does not imply that users can send photos in their original quality, as the feature maintains image dimensions. Whenever a user shares a photo using the "high quality" option, it is identified as a high-quality photo, and a new tag is automatically added to the message bubble, providing information to the recipient about its origin.

It is important to note that this feature is limited to images alone, and there is currently no method to send videos with improved quality unless they are sent as documents. Additionally, the feature is not available when sharing photos through status updates.

As previously mentioned, the feature is currently accessible to a limited group of beta testers. However, it is expected that the company will eventually release this feature to all users in the near future. In other news, in April, WhatsApp reportedly banned 7.4 million Indian accounts as a precautionary measure to combat abuse on its platform. The company's spokesperson clarified that approximately 2.4 million accounts were banned proactively, without relying on any user reports from the social media platform.
